Howard Days is 4 Months Away!

With the cold and snowy weather embracing most of the U.S. right now, let's turn our thoughts to warmer times, even warmer friends and fine fellowship! There is no better way to do that than by coming to Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas!

In 2023, Howard Days happens on April 28th & 29th at the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, Texas! We will be celebrating 100 Years of Weird Tales! Howard fans know the importance of The Unique Magazine to Howard's career, so we will enjoy leaning more in celebration!

After enduring a second consecutive year of brain-searing heat in 2022, it was decided to try a cooler time to hold our event and late April was selected. We realize this may not accommodate everyone and we will see how things go for 2023 as to making future decisions.

In the meantime, we are preparing for our annual event with all the enthusiasm and fervor as in years past. All of the familiar events at Howard Days are in place: the REH Museum is open to all; tours of the museum, grounds and the city of Cross Plains and local environs are geared up; entertaining panels are being scheduled; we'll feed you with a Hot Dog Lunch, a Celebration Banquet and a Sunset Bar-B-Que, you can have your mail stamped with an exclusive to Howard Days souvenir postal cancellation; there's a Silent Auction filled with collectible and unique Howard items, ditto the Museum's Gift Shop; there's an open-air Pavilion in which to relax with a cool drink and Howard Fellowship (and a small Dealers Area); the Cross Plains Public Library will be showing not only their collection of original REH typescripts but also, in keeping with our theme, will display the many issues of original Weird Tales magazines they have on hand. There will be REH poetry readings (which include a multi-language reading of "Cimmeria" plus the selection of poems REH had printed in Weird Tales).

Also this year, we've got a couple of surprises in the works: a special panel and a special publication. We'll just tease you with those right now and get the details to you soon.

And, there will be the wide array of Howard scholars, enthusiasts and fans from all over the world, highlighted by our 2023 Guest of Honor, John Gregory Betancourt. As a former Editor of the 1987 revival of Weird Tales Magazine, John will be on hand to talk about his writing and publishing career and his involvement with the most important vehicle for the writings of Robert E. Howard.

So, come to Cross Plains and help celebrate Robert E. Howard and 100 Years of Weird Tales!

The 36 West Motel is No More

Word has come to us today that the 36 West Motel in Cross Plains is no more. The property was bought and the structure has been removed.

Since Howard Days began in 1986, the 36 West was "the" place to stay for Howard Days activities, as it was located next door to the Robert E. Howard house.

In truth, the 36 had seen its better days before the 1990's, but it was always a serviceable place to stay for fans who came to Howard Days. However, the last several years it had  become pretty run-down and fell out of favor with most Howard Days attendees. But there was still that convenience of being right  next door. Sigh.

No plans have been announced as to the future of the property. We certainly could hope for a nice new motel on the spot that would compliment Woody's Car Museum as well as the Howard Museum.

There will be 36 West stories to be told in the Pavilion at Howard Days 2023, coming April 28-29 at the Howard Museum in Cross Plains. Hope you can be there!

HOWARD DAYS 2023 WILL BE HELD APRIL 28-29

After considerable discussion, polling and debate, Project Pride of Cross Plains and The Robert E. Howard Foundation are pleased to announce the dates for Robert E. Howard Days 2023: April 28 & 29.

The main reason for the date change from June is due to the furnace-like temperatures that attendees have endured for the last two Howard Days. Moving the event to late April will provide everyone with a more inviting environment and make the outdoor activities more pleasant.

The theme of Howard Days 2023 will be "100 Years of Weird Tales" in celebration of the century birthday of The Unique Magazine. Not only was Weird Tales Bob Howard's first and foremost market, it provided us with a plethora of famous writers, like H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and many others. We will celebrate Howard's impact in the pages of WT, of course, along with Weird Tales' pioneering of several literary genres.

The Guest of Honor at Howard Days 2023 is To Be Announced. He or she will headline all the regular events that happen at Howard Days; plus there's always room for surprises and continued Howard Fellowship.

We hope you can make plans to join us! Check back here soon for all the updates. Y'all come!

Updates and Info for Howard Days Next Week!

Crunch time is here! As we prepare for travels and anticipate the upcoming Howard Days Fellowship, we've still got more last minute info to share.

First off, we'll tease you with a couple of items to be found in the Silent Auction. Scott Rowell of Colorado had this nifty laser engraved plaque made, showing Old Two-Gun hoisting a brew in honor of all his fans coming to visit him. It will be up for grabs at the Silent Auction on Friday Night! Also on the docket is a nice little engraved glass piece (unframed - shown here with a frame) that was made from a pane of the window from Bob's room at the house! (Renovations a couple of years ago made the glass available.) Another one-of-a-kind item only found at the Silent Auction!

The Waitlist for the Banquet has gotten a bit longer, but Project Pride is doing everything they can to accommodate as many folks as possible. Don't forget that you may still attend the Silent Auction and hear Guest of Honor Fred Malmberg's speech, so we hope you come and hang out.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation Press will be under their large canopy in the yard at the Howard Museum Friday and Saturday. In addition to a good quantity of the original 300 run of their Howard books, they will have two new offerings on hand, in limited quantity: The Collected Letters of REH Vol.2 and Steve Harrison's Casebook. These are the reprint editions that are offered when the original edition sells out, and now you can get your copy and save on shipping before they become available on Amazon June 14th. Plus, you get a prize with every purchase.

The Cross Plains Review newspaper offices will be open for visiting on Friday from 12 to 4. Come and see how newspapering was once done, view all the old-time equipment and stand where Bob Howard once had a brief job!

Don't forget that the Howard Days 2022 souvenir postal cancellation is only available on Friday at the C>P. Post Office (and they are closed for lunch between 11:30 and 12:30).

The 30+ Minutes with HP Lovecraft pod cast recently interviewed Bill Cavalier about Howard Days. You can hear it all at https://anchor.fm/lcpl.

In addition to hosting The Whole Wide World movie at Treadway Park on Friday night, Cross Plains has put together a Spring Bash festival at Treadway Park on Saturday. There will be a classic car show, vendors and food booths for all to enjoy (especially the non-Howard fans...)

It looks like the weatherman is not going to cooperate much this next week. Temperatures in Cross Plains will be near or over the 100 degree mark, so be sure to use your sun screen and stay well hydrated! Some of us aren't used to such hot temperatures, so let's be careful out there!

While you're in town, be sure to support the Cross Plains Library and Senior Center with you donations, enjoy some frosty treats at DQ, great donuts at the Donut Hut, good food at Jean's Feed Barn, Mexico City Cafe, Bubba's BBQ and the Backwoods Grill, to name a few. Patsy's Flowers is also open with Cross Plains gifts & t-shirts, as is Salamander's. And Higgenbothams General Store has just about everything and it's like stepping back into the 1950's when you go there. (We like to buy a new pocket knife every year.)

And new this year, The Bunkhouse has opened up next to Mexico City with 3 bedrooms in a shared space. Call 817-913-3531 for info.

We'll be waiting for you when you come to Howard Days 2022. It will be another spectacular event as we honor and American (and Texan!) original, Robert E. Howard. Come join us!

HOWARD DAYS IS NEXT WEEK!

By this time next week, folks from all over the world will be arriving in Cross Plains, Texas for the annual Howard Days event.

Here are a few comments, tips and pointers for enjoying Howard Days as much as possible.

If you do come in on Wednesday (June 8) it will be ok to visit the Howard Museum. While the House is not open, the grounds are available for all. The Pavilion has some seating if you just want to hang out. This is a really good time to get clear photos of the House and grounds. There will be folks stopping by and enjoying some early Howard Fellowship there and this can go on until after dark. Some will gather at Jean's Feed Barn for lunch or dinner too. Believe me, you'll be able to spot fellow Howard fans!

Thursday is when things really start to happen. The Howard Museum and Alla Ray Morris Pavilion will be available during the day for all with tables and chairs. You may play games in the Pavilion at this time (see the Gaming Schedule below) and enjoy a refreshing beverage or bring-your-own-lunch along with the comradery of Howard Fans. Cool drinks will probably be available there, but bring your own just in case.

Speaking of schedules, the entire weekend schedule (+gaming) will be posted LARGE size at the Pavilion.

On Thursday, the Museum will be open from 2 to 4 pm. You may tour the house freely, but there are no docents that day. The Gift Shop will be open as well, filled with new items and Howard stuff you just can't live without. Don't forget that the Gift Shop doesn't take cards, just cash or checks.

And also on Thursday: the Cross Plains Senior Center is having a fund-raising Fish (and Chicken!) Fry from 5 to 7.The SC is easy to find right on Main Street and is a nice gathering place for all Howard Fans! Plus, your $8.00 will help out the Senior Center as you dine among the most friendly of folks!

On Wednesday or Thursday some folks like to take the drive to Brownwood to visit Howard's grave site. Howard is buried in the Greenleaf Cemetery. There are also a wide variety of restaurants and stores there. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/3931/greenleaf-cemetery.

A reminder for the Friday (only) Bus Tour of Cross Plains and environs: the Bus leaves from the Pavilion pretty close to 9am, so you'll want to be there early. We have to do this early morning while it's still relatively cool, so we appreciate your understanding.

Also on Friday: at dusk, the Howard bio-pic The Whole Wide World will be shown in Treadway Park (just west of the Howard Museum). And on Saturday there will be a Classic Car Show in Treadway.

A word about being outdoors in Cross Plains. It will be hot! no matter what the weatherman says, that Texas sun will broil you like a slab of meat if you're not careful. Sun screen and plenty of hydration will be the order of the day. Some bug spray will be available in the Pavilion as well - have you SEEN the size of bugs in Texas?!

Almost all of the information you need is available under the tabs at the top of this page. However, there's nothing like experiencing Howard Days for yourself. Project Pride and the City of Cross Plains have pulled out all the stops to welcome the fans of Robert E. Howard and honor his legacy. There's no hospitality like Texas Hospitality!

If this is your first time, you'll need to know that Howard Days is like a big ol' family reunion, where you know some folks and you don't know others. But when we all get together in the Pavilion, you'll know that all the folks there are family, come to pay respects to Ol' Uncle Two-Gun Bob. We're looking forward to seeing you and sharing much Howard Fellowship!

HOWARD DAYS IS 2 WEEKS AWAY!

That's right! Only two weeks until The Best Two Days in Howard Fandom! Hope you've made plans to be there June 10th & 11th at the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, Texas!

We're finalizing the crossing of the "t's" and dotting of the "i's" to make sure that Howard Days 2022 will be the best ever! Project Pride works tirelessly year round towards the preservation of the REH Museum and Robert E. Howard's Legacy. They've got everything ready to go and are anticipating with much pleasure the arrival of Howard fans from all over the world to Howard's town of Cross Plains, Texas.

Here are some bits of information for you to consider as the event gets closer and you get on the road to share in the fine REH Fellowship to be found at Howard Days.

As our theme this year is The REH Influence on Gaming, we hope to be able to accommodate Conan (et al) tabletop gamers as best we can in a limited environment. See the Tentative Schedule under the EVENTS header for a detailed update, but here's the skinny:
  • There will be tabletop gaming at tables in the Museum yard all day both days.
  • Gaming will be allowed IN the Pavilion after 4 pm on Friday and after 6 pm on Saturday.
  • We will have open and scheduled gaming at the CP Library on both days.
While the Friday night Celebration Banquet is sold out, you can waitlist your name at Projpride@yahoo.com. *Hopefully* there will be some cancellations or no-shows.
But remember that even if you don't have a dinner reservation, you can still show up at the Baptist Church Life Center and hang out, bid on the Silent Auction items and listen to Fred Malmberg's Guest of Honor speech. Howard Fellowship will fill the room!

And speaking of the Silent Auction, it's not too late to send those REH items as donations to Project Pride for a fun night of exciting bidding. 100% of the proceeds goes to Project Pride's maintenance of the REH Museum. Silent Auction, Project Pride, POB 534, Cross Plains, TX 76443. Or you may drop off auction items at the Museum on Thursday or Friday.

And speaking of Thursday, don't forget that the REH Museum (and Gift Shop!) is open from 2 to 4 pm, and the Pavilion is open all day until late night! Gaming on Thursday will be allowed in the Pavilion.
The Cross Plains Senior Center also has a Fish Fry fund raiser from 5 to 7. Don't care for fish? They have chicken, too!

Don't forget that Cash is King at Howard Days. Checkbooks work very well also, as those are the only forms of payment allowed at the Museum Gift Shop (and Auction), There are several ATM's located around Cross Plains for your convenience, so not to worry.

There are still Dealers Tables available for set-up in the yard around the Pavilion. Cost is $25.00 for both days, payable in the Gift Shop (or in advance at Pay Pal: Projpride@yahoo.com. We'd prefer that the bulk of your items offered are either REH or directly related. This IS HOWARD Days!

The Schedule pretty much says it all, but please know that changes may happen, including add-ons, surprises, extemporaneous fun and spontaneous events may pop up. Howard Days is not unlike a Family Reunion, and fellowship and good will are a big part of what is happening, all under the umbrella of honoring Good Ol' Uncle Two-Gun Bob.

Hope to see you in two weeks. Safe travels, y'all.

The Friday night Celebration Banquet at this year's Howard Days is now SOLD OUT.

For the first time ever, all the seats at the Banquet have been sold three weeks in advance of Howard Days. We are now taking names for the Waitlist, as there are usually some cancellations or no-shows.

You may still come for the Silent Auction, place bids and hang out - and even listen in on the festivities and speech by our Guest of Honor, Fred Malmberg. There just won't be a seat for you at the dinner table.

This is the first time the Howard Days Banquet has sold out this quickly! We're very glad for that, as all proceeds go to Project Pride and their ongoing perpetuation of the Legacy of Robert E. Howard.

So, get your name on the Waitlist  and keep your fingers crossed.

See you soon!

HOWARD DAYS IS 1 MONTH AWAY!

One month to go for The Best Two Days in Howard Fandom!

We've "finalized" the Howard Days schedule as best we can and you can see it by clicking on the "EVENTS" tab up top. Of course, nothing is truly "final" until HD 2022 actually gets here, but we hope you can plan accordingly with what we're showing here.

Some additional information, reminders and suggestions are what we have for you now.

Please note our previous post where we ask for your help in donating items to the Silent Auction, to register as early as possible for the Banquet, postal cancellation souvenir info and The Whole Wide World showing.

As this year there are number of anniversaries in the World of REH, we note how it's been 40 years since the first Arnold Conan movie, Conan the Barbarian. This previously undetermined panel slot goes to Paul Sammon and his entertaining presentation of his involvement with both of the Arnold movies.

Another added guest is Joel Bylos, the CCO of Funcom, who will give us some up close looks at the World of Conan video games.

There will be REH gaming in the Cross Plains Public Library as well, where table-top and role playing games will be presented on a limited basis by some notables in the REH gaming industry. Information on that will be available in the Pavilion of Friday morning.

We need to remind everyone that when you make a purchase in the Gift Shop or win a bid at the Silent Auction, you must pay in cash or with a check. There are several ATM machines available in Cross Plains. (You can bring your own checkbook!)

2022 finds us at the 90th anniversary of Howard's masterpiece poem, Cimmeria. For the last several years, we've read Cimmeria in multiple languages, stanza by stanza, from Bob Howard's porch. And we will certainly continue this tradition, but this year, the poem will be read completely in each language, rather than stanza by stanza in all the languages. We will interspace each language in between other Howard poetry read in our open mic setting.

We will have more announcements and bits of information in the now few weeks until Howard Days. If you are still on the fence about coming, know that Texas is a big state and there's plenty of room. Also, everything at HD is FREE, except for a seat at the Banquet! And those seats are going fast, so be sure to register right away so you can enjoy great food, a Guest of Honor speech from Fred Malmberg and helping Project Pride with your bids at the Silent Auction!

Hope to see you in a month's time! It will be here before you know it!

Y'all come.

Howard Days Happens Next Month!

Howard Days will be happening in a little over five weeks! We hope you can join us at the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, Texas on June 10th & 11th for The Best Two Days in Howard Fandom! It will be here before we know it!

Here are several announcements and comments for all attendees

COME FOR DINNER AND A MOVIE!

It has just been announced that on Friday night at dark, the City of Cross Plains will present an open-air showing of the movie THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD at Treadway Park, which is just west of the Howard Museum. This ties in nicely with the Celebration Banquet as a dinner and a movie date! Come and see this award-winning film about Robert E. Howard and Novalyne Price. Details will follow.

GAMING AT HOWARD DAYS!

The final details are still being worked out, but REH gaming will take place at HD 2022. The Cross Plains Public Library will host table-top REH games on Friday and Saturday and there will be CONAN role-playing games in the meeting room at the Methodist Church on Friday. We'll get you the specifics as we get closer to the event.

POSTAL CANCELLATION SOUVENIR

The official Howard Days Postal Cancellation is available only on Friday, June 10th and we've been reminded to inform you that while the Cross Plains Post Office is open from 9 am to 4 pm, they will be closed for lunch from 11:30 to 12:30. Here is the 2022 stamp.

SILENT AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED!

One of the very best events that happens during Howard Days is the Silent Auction of Howard & related items, held in conjunction with the Celebration Banquet on Friday night. 100% of the proceeds from this auction goes to Project Pride and the year-round maintenance of the REH Museum and it can only happen with your generous donations!
So now is the time for you to go through your Howard collection, decide what items: books, paperbacks, magazines, comics, fanzines, artwork - all kinds of Howard and Howard related stuff that we all have - and donate to the Silent Auction.
You can send your donation to REH Silent Auction, c/o Project Pride, POB 534, Cross Plains, TX 76443 or bring your items to the Gift Shop at the House during the day on Friday (or Thursday).
You'll be helping out Project Pride with ensuring the Legacy of Ol' Two-Gun Bob Howard, plus you'll be making room in your collection for the items you win in the Auction! WIN WIN!

AND SPEAKING OF THE CELEBRATION BANQUET
As we've mentioned before, the only real cost at Howard Days is the $25.00 fee for a seat at the Celebration Banquet. Every other activity is presented for you AT NO COST! As in: FREE!
Your 25 bucks also helps pays for coffee & donuts Friday morning, the Hot Dog Lunch at noon on Friday, all the water & pop in the giant cooler at the Pavilion and also the Saturday BBQ.
As tickets usually go fast for the Banquet, make sure you get your reservation early by sending your $25 per person to the address listed above or you may Pay Pal to Projpride@yahoo.com. Seating is limited to 150 and is always sold out, so make your reservation right away!

More announcements are forthcoming as we get closer to Howard Days.

SEVEN WEEKS UNTIL HOWARD DAYS!

Bob and Patches will be waiting for you!

Well, all right! HOWARD DAYS 2022 is coming up fast (SEVEN WEEKS! Where did the time go?) and we're in the process of getting everything ready!

The schedule is 90% set (we're still waiting on confirmation for one panel and our gaming venues), so it's time for you to make your plans to join us at the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, Texas on June 10th & 11th. And we've even got stuff going on Thursday the 9th!

The dual themes this year are The REH Influence on Gaming (role-playing, table-top/board games and video) and the 90th anniversaries of Conan, the Cimmerian as well as two Howard masterpieces: Worms of the Earth and the poem Cimmeria.

Fred Malmberg, President of Heroic Signatures (formerly Cabinet Entertainment), will be our Guest of Honor this year. Fred was instrumental in introducing both Conan and role-playing gaming to the people of Sweden and has carried on those activities in the U.S. for over 20 years now. Come hear him speak at the Celebration Banquet.

All the usual HD events will be happening: the Robert E. Howard Museum will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; you can tour the museum at your leisure or have docents tell you all about the house where REH lived and wrote. The Alla Ray Morris Pavilion, adjacent to the House, is available for the entire weekend as the main meeting place for all attendees.

The Gift shop in the House is well-stocked with incredible REH items. The Cross Plains Public Library is open to show their collection of original REH typescripts and Weird Tales & pulp magazines. The REH Foundation Press will be set up to sell Howard books and we'll have tables for dealers of REH/related merchandise set up in the surrounding yard. Bus, Walking and Grounds tours will be made, panels will be given, a special souvenir postal cancellation stamp is available on Friday and a Hot Dog Lunch will satisfy your hunger Friday Noon.

We'll have a Celebration Banquet on Friday night, where hundreds of REH items will be shown for the Silent Auction that takes place at the Banquet. Saturday night brings us the Sunset BBQ, where authentic Texas barbeque will make you glad you came!

We're planning on having REH gaming over the weekend too. Role-playing and board games will be presented (and a cornhole game in the yard!); stay tuned for more information on logistics for the gaming.

But best of all, the Howard Days weekend is all about REH Fellowship. You can meet Howard Fans from all over the world: France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan - and of course, the good ol' USA - who gather in Cross Plains to celebrate the Life and Legacy of Robert E. Howard.

More detailed information is available if you click on the tabs at the top of this page. We're looking forward to seeing you in Cross Plains in just SEVEN WEEKS! We guarantee a great time!

Y'all come!

Since acquiring the rights to Conan in 2002, and the rest of the REH estate in 2006, Fred has worked internationally with the comics, game, toy, and entertainment industries, bringing Conan and Howard to a broader audience than likely ever before, in particular through computer games, Such as the Age of Conan and Conan Exiles games from licensee Funcom. Currently, he is serving as an Executive Producer of a Conan entertainment package at Netflix, and heads up the Heroic Signatures team in Los Angeles.

Happy Birthday, Ol' Two-Gun Bob!

Happy 116th birthday to Robert E. Howard, author, poet and an American and Texas original. We hope everyone reads a favorite Howard story or poem today while enjoying a libation of choice. Raise your glass to the incomparable Robert E. Howard!

And while we're celebrating anniversaries, Robert E. Howard Days (June 10-11) will feature the 90th birthday of Howard's Conan the Cimmerian and the writing of two of his masterpieces: Worms of the Earth and "Cimmeria", the poem that inspired Conan.
We'll also be marking the 40th anniversary of the first movie, Conan the Barbarian.

Details of this and more happenings at Howard Days are forthcoming and will be found here and on Facebook. Hope to see you there!
