2019 HOWARD DAYS SCHEDULE


Join us this year as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Project Pride of Cross Plains as well as the 90th Year of Sword & Sorcery fiction, as conceived by Robert E. Howard in his story "The Shadow Kingdom". We also tip our hat to 90 Years of Sailor Steve Costigan. Celebration all around!

THURSDAY JUNE 6

2:00 - 4:00 pm: The Robert E. Howard House and Museum is open to the public. There are no docents on duty but the Gift Shop will be open, as will the Pavilion.

5:00 - 7:00 pm: Fish Fry at the Cross Plains Senior Center
6:00 pm: Barbarian Festival Parade, Main Street
Afterwards, Howard Fans gather at the Alla Ray Morris Pavilion next to the House.

FRIDAY JUNE 7

8:30 – until gone: Coffee and donuts at the Pavilion, compliments of Project Pride

9 am – 4 pm: Robert E. Howard House Museum open to the public. The adjacent Alla Ray Morris Pavilion will be open from Thursday through Saturday.

9 am – 4 pm: REH Postal Cancellation at Cross Plains Post Office. Friday Only.

9 am – 11 am: Bus Tour of Cross Plains & Surrounding Areas. Friday Only. Meet at the Pavilion before 9 am.

10:00 am to 4 pm: The REH Foundation canopy and Dealers Area open on grounds east of the Museum.

10 am – 4 pm: Cross Plains Public Library open. Original Robert E. Howard typescripts and pulp magazines available for viewing along with the Library's considerable Howard collection. The Conan Board Game and the Conan Role-playing Game will be presented.

11:00 am. PANEL: A History of Project Pride and the Robert E. Howard Museum.
Join Arlene Stephenson, Era Lee Hanke, Susan McNeel Childers and Bill Cavalier for a history of the Howard Museum, Project Pride and Howard Days history. NOTE: THIS PANEL WILL BE PRESENTED IN THE PAVILION.

Noon: HOT DOG! Lunch hosted by Project Pride at the Pavilion.

1:30 pm: PANEL: The Writers of REH
The Junto of people who have written about REH will talk about the perspectives they've used in writing ABOUT Robert E. Howard. Panelists: David C. Smith, Mark Finn, Dennis McHaney, Patrice Louinet and Rob Roehm.

2:30 pm: PANEL: The Fourth Annual Glenn Lord Symposium. Howard scholars will present papers discussing the life and works of Robert E. Howard. Panelists: Jason Ray Carney, Nicole Emmelhainz and Ralph Norris..

Following this panel will be the presentations of the 2018 Robert E. Howard Foundation Awards.

5:30 – 6:30 pm: Silent Auction items available for viewing & bidding at Banquet site

6:30 pm: Robert E. Howard Celebration Banquet & Silent Auction at the Family Life Center of the Baptist Church on Main St. Guest of Honor Speaker: David C. Smith

9 pm: Fists at the Ice House: Our perennial favorite boxing show!
Panelists: Chris Gruber, Mark Finn and Jeff Shanks have some surprises for this time!
NOTE: THIS PANEL WILL BE HELD BEHIND THE ICE HOUSE ON THE SLAB WHERE REH ACTUALLY BOXED!

Afterward there will be Howard Fellowship at the Pavilion. Extemporaneous REH poetry reading is liable to break out!


SATURDAY JUNE 8

9 am – 4 pm: Robert E. Howard House Museum open to the public. The adjacent Alla Ray Morris Pavilion will be open from Thursday through Saturday.

9 am – 4 pm: BARBARIAN FESTIVAL at Treadway Park, 3 blocks west of REH House

10 am – 3 pm: Cross Plains Public Library open. Original Robert E. Howard typescripts and pulp magazines available for viewing along with the Library's considerable Howard collection. The Conan Board Game and the Conan Role-playing Game will be presented also.

10 am to 4 pm: The REH Foundation canopy and Dealers Area open on grounds east of the Museum.

11 am PANEL: Steve Costigan Turns 90 and He's Still Swinging!
Chris Gruber, Mark Finn and Jeff Shanks return for Round 2 celebrating Howard's pugnacious pugilist as he celebrates his 90th birthday. Surprises are in store.

Lunch & Festival Activities at your leisure during the day. Feel free to dine al fresco at the Pavilion!

1:30 pm PANEL: Kull, Conan, Kane or Bran- The Original Sword &Sorcery Characters
Panelists Dierk Guenther, Jason Waltz, David C. Smith and Jason Ray Carney will discuss the importance of each of these characters to Howard's creation of S&S.

2:30 pm PANEL: What's Up with REH? There is a lot going on all over the world with Robert E. Howard's name attached. Come and hear all about it. Panelists: Jason Ray Carney, Paul Herman, Michael Jacobsen from Cabinet Entertainment plus more surprises!

4:30 pm Tour of the Grounds at the Howard Museum. Bill Cavalier will once again do his famous impression of Rusty Burke on a walk-around on the ground where Bob Howard left many footprints. Meet in front of the House.

6:00 to 8:00 pm: Sunset BBQ at the Pavilion, compliments of Janet Swanson.

Afterwards, REH Porchlight Poetry. Readings from the porch of the House where Howard wrote them will include a multi-language presentation of "Cimmeria". All are invited to read and enjoy.

There will be some extemporaneous panel-like events, announcements and surprises again this year all during Howard Days.
